NEW HAMPSHIRE

State Board approved the NH prek-16 Numeracy Action Plan which follows the format and design of our Literacy Action Plan. It can be found on the homepage of the NH DOE website. www.ed.state.nh.us

The Instructional Coaching Initiative continues with the first cohort of teachers. A second cohort is in the planning stage.

UNH Writers Academy and NH Literacy Institutes Summer brochures are available through the Department of English at UNH.

April 2010, third annual literacy festival 9-12am at Merrimack Valley School. This large literacy festival is family centered and provides exciting connections with literature; free books are part of the draw.

June 9, 2010: Granite State Council Appreciation Dinner will feature Jerry Palotta as speaker at The Puritan Restaurant in Manchester. Literacy Award winners will be honored and all are welcome.

RHODE ISLAND

Rhode Island is one of 16 finalists in the $4-billion federal Race to the Top competition, designed to reward states that embrace radical school reforms. U.S. Education secretary, Arne Duncan, announced the finalists from among the forty states and the District of Columbia that applied for the unprecedented infusion of federal aid. Rhode Island is asking for $126.6 million to make dramatic changes to increase student achievement

Rhode Island Reading Week was April 5-April 10. The Poetry Anthology Recognition, sponsored by the Rhode Island State Council, was held on April 10th.

In this 4 day workshop, classroom teachers (k-3), special educators, reading specialists, administrators, supervisors and other resource staff will deepen their understanding of the 5 essential components of reading in grades K-3: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary. Over the course of the 4 days, participants will expand their repertoire of research-based instructional approaches to help students achieve Grade Level Expectations. The instructors will provide opportunities to practice several approaches with colleagues, and help teachers plan for classroom application.
